The tournaments act as a training ground. Parents start their kids as young as 6 years old in workshops and online coaching to help their children excel. Contests form the basis for measuring achievement in more than 80 regional centers across the United States. Krishnarao Nandipati said he believed that the contests create not only good spelling habits, but research skills that will serve his daughter well in high school and college.

In many ways, Snigdha is still an awkward kid. But don't underestimate her. She can spell words you don't even know exist.

A Korean Peninsula military specialist at the RAND Corporation in the U.S. warned over a decade ago that a combination of portable weapons of mass destruction and over 100,000-strong special forces constitutes the biggest North Korean threat to Seoul's security. It would be a great calamity if North Korean special forces infiltrated downtown Seoul equipped with small biological and chemical weapons. The troops that would be mobilized if Pyongyang decided to launch a local provocation like occupying the five South Korean islets off the west coast would also be special forces.
These men are told to ready themselves for suicide missions.
